Last On Alive Debut EP Review

Last One Alive are relatively new to the Cape Town and South African music scene, however this project has been over 2 years in the making, and comprises of a super group of local musicians with a wealth of experience to their name. Even though they are relatively new, they have already won a SAMMA (South African Metal Music Award) for their music video for their single ‘Kiss the Ground‘.

Doin’ Sublime, The Right Way : The Sublime Tribute Show 2014

Last year I waited in a gargantuan line that snaked around the block, in a desperate attempt get in on the loving that was last year’s Sublime Tribute Show. Unfortunately I was mercilessly turned away with a helpless shrug and a simple “Sorry, sold out”. It was there and then that I made a pact with myself that, whatever happened, I would not miss the next one. This year I held true to that promise and not even my broken wrist could have held me back.
2014 marks the 3rd annual Sublime Tribute Show, all of which have been raging, sold-out successes. This year saw the death of the monster line as all tickets sold out the week before the show, a pretty impressive feat if you consider that the only advertising done was via an event page on Facebook- that fact alone is a true testament to the love that Cape Town shares for this band. De Wallen, Footnote & Red State at Mercury

With the beers as cold as the weather outside, and Mercury comparable to most bank balances a day before payday, it was time for some fresh faces in the form of self-proclaimed new kids on the block: De Wallen, Footnote and Red State. Continue reading De Wallen, Footnote & Red State at Mercury

ShortStraw Review – Mercury 26th April

I hit Mercury on the 26th to see some bands I’d yet to hear before. It was the weekend of Utopia though, so the good turnout was a pleasant surprise.First up was a band new to the scene called I Was An Exorcist, fronted by Jeremy De Tolly, erstwhile singer of The Dirty Skirts. The sweeping, almost scary melodies in their songs are loud and flow freely into one another, almost to the point that the ending of one song sounds like the beginning of another. Rolling Stone Presents – Goodnight Wembley, Woodstock Mafia & Man As Machine at Mercury Review

My man-crush (as my girlfriend calls him nowadays) was performing at Mercury for a change. We’ve been following George van der Spuy and Taxi Violence since they started way back in 2005, so when the opportunity arose to see his new group Goodnight Wembley again, we jumped at the chance. Where else in the world would you be able to see, supported by relatively new kids on the block Man as Machine and Woodstock Mafia, all for the massively low sum of forty bucks? The Perfect Circle : Lucy Kruger, Saintfearless & Reburn at Mercury – Review

It never occurred to me before just how much Lucy Kruger embodied the same sense of passion, conviction and irony as seen with Alanis Morrisette or Laura Marling. As soon as Lucy opened her mouth on the evening of Mercury’s Perfect Circle, my friend turned to me, eyes wide. “She’s so good!” she mouthed. And she was right. Lucy Kruger extends herself beyond the generic quirky pop-folk shell we’ve become so accustomed to. The wonderful thing about Lucy’s live performances is that you can practically read the lyrics on her face. She sings with an intensity that forces you to engage in some way, to feel as she feels. Her music has a different sound altogether. It’s fresher and cleaner than the usual fluff (no, it’s not a typo) we hear in that particular genre. CTMS Interview – Joshua Grierson

Interview by : Ezelle Louw (@lupaphotography)

Joshua Grierson. This man certainly knows how to speak to your soul with his music. He has been in the music industry for quite some time and shows no signs of taking it easy. “Strange Heart” is his upcoming album, which I believe all fans are eagerly awaiting.

His honest demeanour and storyteller tunes combines into a very powerful solo performance. Exciting news is that Joshua has decided to expand further. A few talented musicians is now joining him for the full band experience. Diversity. That is what comes to mind when I think of Joshua. He is constantly trying different fields and blending that into his music.

We took some time out of his busy schedule to get to know the man behind the music.
